As happens every day at Wild Iris Books, someone wandered in and asked if they may put their flyer on our community bulletin board.

This particular day, it just so “happened” I was the one behind the register and the “someone” who wandered in turned out to be Joseph Williams, Acupuncturist, entrepreneur and wearer of smokin’ hot shoes!

Now, Joe is a good lookin’ young fella’…but the operative word in this observation is young. When he told me he’s an Acupuncturist (because I’m nosy like that and I asked), I thought to myself, “Fantastic! Doogie Howser is playing Pin the Tail on the Patient these days!

Also, I have to admit…I know Wild Iris Books is a Metaphysical/New Age store…and I know I’m a psychic medium…BUT…I’m not an easy sell when it comes to the “woo-woo”.

Holistic Healing, Aromatherapy, Chakra Clearing, Herbal Medicine and…the biggest woo-woo paradigm of all…Reiki…are just not modalities I’m willing to say are as effective as Western Medicine. However, that is not because of the modalities in and of themselves, that’s because everybody and they momma’ is a “Reiki Master” or, for fifty bucks will “clear your Chakra’s”.

It’s the same skepticism I have for psychics, mediums, tarot readers, etc…and that includes myself!

However, Doogie…uh…I mean Joseph…was just so excited about opening his practice, Sunshine Integrative Health, Inc, here in Gainesville and was so earnest in his approach…I agreed to a session with him.

After all, I would do almost anything to get rid of these darned hot flashes!

Also, I understood that, theoretically, the practice of Acupuncture is predicated on stimulating the appropriate acupuncture points located on bodily meridians along which our “life energy” or “qi” flows.

Bottom line…Acupuncturists make sure you get yo’ groove back and are able to unblock the energetic back up so you can go with the flow!

So off to Joseph’s office I went.

Sunshine Integrative Health, Inc. is on the 5th floor of the Seagal Building on University.

Not knowing what to expect and having no expectations, it was kind of like observing someone else going through the process.

At first.

First, Mr. I Wear the Greatest Men’s Shoes in Gainesville, asked me a bunch of health related questions.

No biggie…standard stuff.

Then he asked me personal questions related to life experiences and emotions.

And that is exactly when I went into shut down.

I’m a Scorpio.

I don’t “share”.

But, knowing I was going to write at least one article about the experience, I decided to play along and commit.

The next half hour was filled with Joseph gently poking needles into different pressure points.

It didn’t hurt at all…ish.

There was only one time that his pokin’ around made me uncomfortable. However, as I later discovered, that was one of my energy channels most out of whack.

THAT is where this story gets realllllyyy interesting!

In the next article, On Pins and Needles: An exploration of Acupuncture in Gainesville, Florida (part two), I’ll reveal whether Joseph was able to help me get my groove back and whether my energy flow flew…or not!
