I Have to Explain What “Celtic” Is? Are You Kidding Me?!

Wild Iris Books Celtic Cross Celtic PostOK…so I’m the partner at Wild Iris Books that’s officially responsible for the blog.

And we carry tons of cool Celtic “stuff” at Wild Iris.

So, naturally, it just “made sense” to my partners (Cheryl and Erica) that I should write a blog post about all things Celtic.

Translation: I drew the short straw.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I dig Celtic.

Believe me, I wear my fair share of Celtic knotwork bracelets, claddagh rings and triskele-triquetra pendants…etc.

Anyone who knows me knows I’m all about the Bling!

One of my favorite groups is Celtic Woman. They’re amazing!

The artwork, the music, the lore…the hot Celtic dudes in chain mail straight from the set of Braveheart …I love it all…BUT…

Trying to give the lowdown on the history and traditions of the Celtic is like trying to guess what a Scotsman is wearing under his kilt.

If I asked you to explain what “Celtic” is or what it means, could you?

That’s OK.

You’re in good company.

Neither can historians.

Threads of the Celtic peoples can be traced through 25 centuries. Theory has it that they occupied what is known today as Eastern Europe, England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Greece and Northern Italy.

Well, that’s the theory anyway.

Why we cannot say, for sure, is that Celtics archived their history only through “oral tradition” (the passing on of knowledge by storytelling).

Because there are no written records, there are those who call the Celtic a non literate culture. If we are speaking solely about the ability to read and write…perhaps.

In terms of being an educated people, however, the Celtic were extraordinarily sophisticated in their amazing propensity in mathematics and the intricacy of their artwork such as we find in Celtic knotwork designs.

But, what the average person knows of the Celtic peoples today is based on the literature of the Romantic Period.

William Butler Yeats and his posse penned such terms as “The Noble Savage” and introduced the idea of the “romantic highlander”.

And we’ve been swooning over the storyline ever since!

Come into Wild Iris Books @ 802 West University Ave. Gainesville, Florida or shop with us online @ www.wildirismarket.com and find the Celtic jewelry, candle, journal, tarot deck, calendar, picture or poster that speaks to the “romantic highlander” in you!
